This was a great place. Visited: July 2007

Simply put, this was an average property with exceptional staff.

Yes, it was older and constantly in a state of renovation. However, the rooms were of a good size, exceptionally clean, and had some of the best views on the island.

I travel a lot, and this place served my needs while on vacation. They had good pools, good food, and attentive staff.

You can enjoy breakfast in the Waterfalls Restaurant, lunch at the pool bar, and dinner at either Waterfalls or Fisherman's Wharf.

There was no glitz, and no false pretenses. It was good to excellent quality of every service.

Also, it was very quiet! This place recharged my batteries for quite a while. We have been here six times since 2001, and will keep it in the #1 spot on our list when we vacation in St. Kitts.

This was a nice property in a convenient location. Visited: February 2007

My wife and I stayed at here for six days before traveling to the Marriott for five more days. We purposely chose two different properties. OTI has a great location and view overlooking the harbor and downtown. It is a short walk (10-15 minutes depending upon where) to downtown along the water.

The hotel is actually several buildings. We had an oversized room with two queen beds with a balcony overlooking one of the pools. It is an older property, but appears to be well cared for.

They do not have Internet in the rooms, but they have a wireless network at the pool bar. We often found folks in the morning or afternoon surfing the web with their laptops. (The Marriott's rooms are of course wired for the Internet, but there is a daily charge).

The staff was very friendly and accommodating which was the same everywhere in St Kitts. Some have mentioned that the pool bar wasn't open beyond 5-6PM. We found that to be true also. Given it's proximity to downtown, there were more business travelers than vacationers which was fine for us. We had the use of the pool several days almost entirely to ourselves.

Besides the pool bar, they had two restaurants: one in the hotel, Waterfalls, and Fisherman's Wharf down below on the water. The best restaurant on the island, though, was right next door - Serependity's. If you enjoy fine food you MUST have dinner there. Make reservations though, you'll need it. We ate there twice, and it was fabulous both times.

Although they are not on the beach, they offer a free shuttle to Turtle Beach or another beach. The drive to Turtle beach was about 30 minutes and would have been $40-50 roundtrip by taxi; that's from the folks at the Marriott that told us.

While OTI was convenient to downtown, the majority of the restaurants on the island were over by the Marriott. Two other excellent restaurants were Stonewalls and Marshalls.

We rented a car for one day, and drove around the island. It was roughly 3-4 hours depending upon stops. We ate Sunday brunch at Ottley's Plantation which was excellent. It was a beautiful place with gorgeous grounds.

This was a good value for the money. Visited: January 2005

Let me start by saying that I gave this resort three stars. However, in some respects it would almost have been a four. I've stayed at other three-star places that to me should have been a definite four plus. This resort wasn't quite there. A few minor changes could push this rating up in my opinion.

We landed in St. Kitts to rain. And upon arriving at our room we were tired, wet and had just dragged a ton of luggage down several stairs to our room.

First impressions were disappointing. We'd seen pictures of rooms that were beautiful. Due to an unfavourable post I'd read, I confirmed with the staff at Ocean Terrace Inn in advance that all of the rooms were in similar condition. I was assured all the rooms were well kept.

We didn't agree. Some of the dissapointment was due to the dismal weather making everything look worse than it was and causing the room to smell a bit musty. However, our room had a kitchenette that wasn't very clean. And because we couldn't forego on the kitchen (severe food allergies), we couldn't be switched to a nicer room they offered us.

Our section was the original wing, and the resort had since built on to it. They have freshened up the rooms with bright curtains and bedding which helped, but they were a bit tired looking and were in need of an update.

Once we voiced our concerns, they sent in staff to clean thoroughly. And by the next afternoon, we walked into a fresher, cleaner and more comfortable room. With the doors open and sunshine beaming in, we were delighted.

The rooms were located next to one of the pools, and the view from our patio was beautiful. We later learned that because we needed two adjoining rooms, the resort had been kind enough to accommodate our request and provided a one-bedroom suite vs. a studio with kichenette because it adjoined the other standard room. We appreciated their consideration. By this time we were much more upbeat about Ocean Terrace.

The food at Waterfalls was a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed our dinners here and only went to the Fisherman's Wharf twice. As Signature had only just started to offer All-Inclusive, there were a couple of hiccups with respect to surcharges. Again, that was resolved quickly enough and we found that by the end of the vacation there was no issue. The staff at Waterfalls deserve a special mention, they were outstanding!

The grounds were beautiful. It's getting a bit older, but the waterfall pool and greenery were stunning. It was a quiet, relaxing place. There was not a lot of entertainment, but it would be great for a family.

Alexis was super helpful and cordial. Most of the staff was excellent, but the odd one could use customer service training. Signature made mention of a casino shuttle, but they didn't in fact offer one.

We received excellent individualized service. Visited: February 2004

Ocean Terrace Inn is the place to stay in St. Kitts if you want more refined individualized attention. Business travelers frequent this smaller hotel which is set in a perfect location overlooking the harbour of Bassiterre (and usually business travelers know the best spots!)

The staff is warm, welcoming and ready to help you enjoy your stay, whether you are here for business or vacation. This is not an all-inclusive which also means service and food are not brought down to a mass consumption level - instead, the staff are quite prepared to respond to your individual requests and needs.
If you stay here, be prepared to enjoy a holiday at a higher level.

This is the sixth year in a row we have been here! Visited: July 2003

This is the sixth year that my wife and I have been to Ocean Terrace Inn. Each year just gets better! Managers Mr. Michael James and Mr. Peter Titley are outstanding. The staff is tremendous and so nice. It is so good to see the same management and staff faces (always friendly) greeting us each year. We cannot wait to get back this coming year!

This is a smaller hotel and a friendly place. All staff know you by your name! My wife loves the three pools and the pool bar. They have great "get togethers" every Tuesday night with excellent food and great rum punch! They can link hotel residents up with island tours and sightseeing of all kinds.

We usually rent a condo-style unit that includes a bedroom, a living room, and a small kitchen/dining room. These units are just perfect. And Donna, the lady who assists our wing, always makes sure our room is perfect each day. Our room and the patio outside of our front door (ocean view) are great places to relax before having a lunch or dinner. We love the Wharf Restaurant.

Ocean Terrace Inn is so close to town (Basseterre) that daily walks for shopping are short and comfortable, and evening walks for supper and/or town entertainment are a pleasure. Car rental there is so easy at OTI; they do it all for you! They also provide van shuttles to the beaches.

OTI provides great accommodations and great services. OTI is like our second home. We always look forward to our February trip and our month of July with OTI.

OTI continues to shine! Visited: July 2001

This is the fifth year that all of our college faculty (and my family) will spend the month of July (and part of August) at Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI). This hotel (and their management) gets better each and every year. It is so good to see the same management and staff faces (always friendly) greet us each year. We cannot wait to get back this coming year!

As the Provost of Berne University, I spend two weeks each winter and four weeks each summer on St. Kitts leading the Berne University Master's and Doctoral Degree Programs held here in July and August. We have about 130 Masters and Doctoral students and their families with us each summer. Many of the students and their families stay at OTI each year and we encourage this, as OTI is a great facility and it is close to the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College where we host our summer degree programs.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy my time at OTI. My wife loves the three pools and the pool bar. OTI has great "get togethers" every Tuesday night with excellent food and great rum punch! They can link hotel residents up with island tours and sightseeing of all kinds.

Disappointing Visited: April 2001
Posted by cindy_m30
My husband and I spent 5 days at OTI and were disappointed that our experience with the hotel and the island did not live up to the reviews we had read on the Internet. We booked a standard room ($157.95 US/night) and were shown to what I would compare to, at best, an old Days Inn type room at the end of a stairway which was in desperate need of repair. After doing nothing more than showing us to our room, the staff member rudely asked for his tip (even though a 10% service charge per night was included).

Deciding to give OTI a fair chance, we unpacked but then discovered the bathroom was in poor condition and there was no hot water. We decided to ask for another room, since the hotel was very empty. Seeming put out, the front desk clerk upgraded us to a deluxe room. Although the room was much nicer (it had been recently renovated), the construction was very poor. We had trouble shutting the door because the knob wasn't properly fitted. This room had two showers - one that only gave very hot water and the other went from cold to warm to hot and back every couple of minutes. The hairdryer never worked, and despite repeated (polite) requests to fix it, nothing was ever done and no attempt was made to get us a replacement.

We took the hotel shuttle to Turtle Beach, which was full of trash and when we asked to use the "complimentary" snorkeling equipment, the attendant said she knew nothing about that and we would have to pay extra for it.

The swim-up bar at OTI never had a bartender, the pool spa didn't work and the majority of the staff had no concept of customer service. Upon checkout, the desk clerk asked us if we enjoyed our stay. When we responded that it was just o.k. and why, she just smiled and said that on our next stay maybe things would be working. Then she went back to talking to her friend.

On the positive side, the room was comfortable (although not worth nearly the $290/night it usually goes for), the hotel grounds were clean and the landscaping around the pool was beautiful. We had good lobster dinners at both Fisherman's Wharf (you have to overlook the smell and trash on your way in) and at the Ocean Restaurant (where we found the nicest staff). Coronets Steel Orchestra was great!

Unfortunately, being close to town isn't much of a plus, as it is very dirty and run down. It is also quite expensive for what you get - a very average dinner for two will cost you about $75; for breakfast, two coffee's and two english muffins was $15.

Beautiful, well-located, and friendly--best bet on St. Kitts Visited: February 2001
Posted by popsonna
My husband and I chose to stay here after reviewing all the other choices on St. Kitts and Nevis. While our price range limited our choices, after taking a tour of the many other hotels during our stay on the islands we agreed that Ocean Terrace Inn was still the best.

The hotel was small, which probably helped to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Most staff members knew our names and inquired about our day trips. We had been in contact with the guest services manager before our trip, and she was particularly helpful then and upon our arrival. We chose to purchase a 7-day eco-safari package, which included a "Superior" room and several day trips, including a hike up to the volcano's crater, a catamaran cruise (this is a MUST for anyone visiting St. Kitts!), a tour of the plantations, and an island tour. This was a great bargain, since the total cost came to the same amount we would have spent on the room in any case. In addition to these activities, the guest services manager was happy to help arrange other programs for us when requested.

The OTI grounds were beautiful (although, alas, the third pool was drained when we were there). We particularly enjoyed the landscaped garden pool. Those searching for great beaches won't find any near OTI. Then again, we didn't find really long stretches of beautiful beaches on St. Kitts at all, and there are shuttles or taxis to take you to any beach you want to visit. For a true beach bum this may be the one drawback to the hotel. Our room was large, with a kitchenette, sitting and dining area, and bedroom. One caveat, however: we were shown to what I assume was a "Standard" room when we arrived (while ours was being cleaned). That level of room was not much more than a standard, budget-type hotel room. For the small difference in price the "Superior" room was worth it.

Perhaps what makes OTI stand apart from the other hotels was its location, just a short walk to Basseterre. At other hotels you are stuck eating on the hotel grounds or taking a taxi, whereas we were free to roam as we pleased. OTI also has two excellent restaurants--one casual and one more formal; both were very good for dinner.

Overall, I would rate OTI very highly, and feel it was the best choice on the island for its location, its wonderful staff, and the quality of the rooms. If you want to stay in St. Kitts, but can't afford the ritzy pampering of a plantation inn, OTI is the way to go.

Lovely, gracious hotel that retains the charm of a small inn Visited: January 2001
Posted by marilyns01
It was love at first sight when I first visited Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) in l980. The spectacular view, flowers everywhere, Caribbean style and friendly staff convinced me I had to return. And I have, year after year, and have seen a small inn expand to a gracious, sizable full-service hotel. However, with all it's growth and additions, OTI has retained the atmosphere of a friendly, low-key, locally-owned island inn.

The variety of accommodations, from the annex to the condos to the Fisherman's Wharf apartments, offer a range of options to please any taste and budget, and if you stay here once, the staff will remember you the following visit.

I particularly appreciate that OTI is not only a tourist destination but also the choice of business travelers and airline personnel. These travel professionals lend a calming influence not found in tourist-only accommodations.

For anyone who rejects OTI because it's not on the beach, you're missing out. Beach transportation is offered daily. Plus, it's walking distance to town, has a wonderful concierge to help plan activities, a fun weekly manager's cocktail party, great steel band on Fridays, workout facilities and three pools. For me though, my very favorite thing about OTI is it's just so pretty! The tropical plants, landscaping, water features and flowers create a truly happy, relaxing place to stay.
